Purple is royalty. A mysterious color, purple is associated with both nobility and spirituality. The opposites of hot red and cool blue combine to create this intriguing color. Purple is one of the biggest trends for fall in both clothing and makeup, and can work well on all different skin tones because of its color variance (blue-purple, aubergine, or even deeper colors).

Deep or bright purples suggest riches while lighter purples are more romantic and delicate. Use redder purples for a warmer color scheme or the bluer purples to cool down. Purple has a special, almost sacred place in nature: lavender, orchid, lilac, and violet flowers are often delicate and considered precious. Because purple is derived from the mixing of a strong warm and strong cool color it has both warm and cool properties. A purple room can boost a child’s imagination or an artist’s creativity. Too much purple, like blue, could result in moodiness.

Purple eyeliner is a nice twist on the theme and MAC’s “Rave” is a kohl-like purple eyeliner with a reflective finish that goes on easily and blends well, with a creamy texture. ($14.50, Pearlglide Eyeliner) This eyeliner is described by reviewers as “deep, rich and sparkly, but not over the top,” as well as “beautiful depth and rich color, with amazing glitter.” This is a limited edition product, so get it while supplies last. InStyle Magazine voted it the “Best Dark” nailcolor for their 2009’s Best Beauty Buys, and OPI’s Lincoln Park After Dark,” a very deep toned matte plum , has enough purple not to be goth, and is an excellent pedicure or short fingernail color. ($9)

The key to choosing the right purple is finding the hue that is best for you, and then showcasing it while balancing out the tones in the rest of your makeup. Be it lavendar, plum, blackberry or a sheer purple tone, choose the right shades to accompany. Purple shadow should be paired with nude, chocolate, mauve, translucent or soft pink lips…something to tone it down. If you are going for a shocking lipcolor in blackberry, choose a shimmery taupe shadow and you will look balanced. Purple will continue to dominate this fall so explore it and see how you can work it subtly into your makeup wardrobe. If you already love purple, us it anywhere or everywhere; just not all at one time.

Using Purple with Other Colors:
A deep eggplant purple with neutral tans or beige is an earthy, conservative color combination with a touch of the mystery that purple provides. Green and purple can be a striking combination in deep or bright jewel tones or use lighter shades for a cheerful, springlike feel. Pink and purple has feminine appeal.
